Another easy two-point summit on Banks Peninsula.
Farmland, great views all around, bleached logs and stumps from historic deforestation, and a small reserve of the forest that once covered the Peninsula. To top it all off, a brief skirmish with snow tussock and speargrass to reach the summit.
Good radio conditions on this one, a nice number of VK contacts and I even tried some CW. Thanks to all, especially Warren, Esther and Ian for the summit-to-summits.
As an alternative to the Pettigrews Road entry point described below, you can start at the Montgomery Park Reserve on the Summit Road, back towards Hilltop. This takes you up through a nice patch of forest with large podocarp trees, but adds possibly 30 mins to the climb. Worth stopping for a look at any rate.
ZL3/CB-726 Mount Sinclair
Height: 841m ASL
Directions: From Hilltop on the Akaroa Highway, take the Summit Road east for 3 mins or so and turn left into Pettigrews Road. At the first bend in Pettigrews Road, a DOC sign marks the track start. Walk along the 4WD tracks all the way. When almost at the top a gate is reached. Don’t go through the gate, leave the track here and find your way up to the left to the summit, avoiding speargrass patches as much as possible. Informal tracks made by others can be followed.
Time to summit: 1.5 hours ascent (380m height gain) from Pettigrews Road.
Summit marker: Trig beacon
Land access permission: Not required, Mt Sinclair Scenic Reserve with access across private farmland. Tracks closed for lambing 1 Sep to 25 Oct
Repeater access: Mt Herbert 147.25, Mt Grey 146.75
